Grey Herons are large grey
and white birds with long legs and a long dagger-like yellow bill. Young birds have a dark
grey crown on the top of their head, but as they grow older this becomes white and they
develop a black crest.
Grey Herons are widespread
in Britain and are often seen in shallow water hunting for small fish and amphibians. They
are quite easy to spot when they are flying as they have long wings with black tips and
they trail their legs behind them.
Herons nest in colonies known as heronries, where
they build their nests in tall trees and lay 3 to 5 eggs.
